First Post

The emergence of American youth as an icon and American youth culture as a cultural force is a relatively recent development. Coming out of the cult of childhood in the nineteenth-century, is the figure of the teenager. Jon Savage's 2007 book Teenage: The Prehistory of Youth Culture 1875-1945 traces the development of this crucial figure of contemporary culture. Recently turned into a film by Matt Wolf, Teenage documents the development of the figure of the teenager and his and her impact on culture.

The pictorial projects and photo essays presented here carry on Savage's work in documenting the figure of the teenager by focusing on the American youth since the 1950s. These student projects provide a wide range of views and takes on the cultural importance of this figure in popular culture, television, and film.
